Afterglow 2011 - Day 2 Sunday

There's a fire down by the lodge/beach every night but we don't always go to it. But that doesn't mean we still don't want to have a fire. So we go up to Craig's Kourt (the CK) and have our own fire.

The CK is in an undisclosed location although I'm sure that anyone who is familiar with the layout of Afterglow could figure it out. Jenny had to use her fingerlights to get there because it's real dark there.

I live with my Roommate on 89th and Lisbon. Before that I lived on Farwell and Ogden. And before that I lived at Cass and Brady. The whole point of that was to tell you that a lot of time has passed since I've been waiting to burn this birdhouse which I stole from the yard at my place on Cass St. It was there when I moved in and I had promised to burn it someday. It was at that house that Kevin and I formed the Back Alley Burners because we burned stuff we found in the alley in my backyard in a fire pit. Basically we burned anything that we could find that was flammable and record songs. We wanted to burn this birdhouse but I liked putting birdseed in there and watching the birds come to feast.

The burning of this birdhouse was 2 1/2 years in the making and the anticipation was killing me, which is why we had to do it Sunday night. After waiting this long to see the birds' dining establishment go up in flames it was rather exhilarating to actually see it happen. All wood eventually burns but you never know how well it is going to catch or how long it is going to burn until you set it on fire. And this house burned.

The birdhouse burned like nothing else that I've ever seen. This might have had to do with my excitement of watching it go up in flames. But I think it might have also had to do with the fact that it was incredibly dry wood and it was also built in a way that allowed a lot of oxygen to travel in and around the structure. The fire could move from the base to the roof unabated and instantly wrecked havoc on the former eatery. Within minutes it was engulfed in flames and I sat and watched it dissolve.
