Cape San Blas, FL Spring Break 2018 - Day 1
Where do we start? I have a history of spending my Spring Break with my Dad. I'm not going to share the links. Just go to the homepage and find them on your own. This year my Dad was going to spend a week in February on the Gulf Coast of the Florida panhandle with Kathy and the dogs and I was going to drive down there with him on a Thursday Feb 15th and fly back home on Wednesday Feb 21st. But things changed when Kathy got sick and had to spend time in the hospital. We didn't leave Thursday. Then we didn't leave Friday. Then we didn't leave Saturday. By Sunday we decided to go because the condo in Florida had already been paid for Feb 17 - 24 and was nonrefundable. I packed up my things, said goodbye to Korben Dallas and drove out to Wisconsin Dells so that my Dad, the dogs and I could begin this trip.

At the rest stop there was a Superman cutout that you could put your head on to and pretend to be the Man of Steel. I may not have been faster than a speeding bullet or more powerful than a locomotive, but I certainly looked the part.
If you've ever read a Superman comic or seen one of the movies, then you know that he lives in the fictional city of Metropolis. Since we were originally supposed to stay here overnight, I asked my Dad if we could make a stop to see the Superman Statue that Metropolis, IL erected in front of their County Courthouse. On January 21, 1972, DC Comics declared Metropolis the "Hometown of Superman." On June 9, 1972, the Illinois State Legislature passed Resolution 572 that confirmed this, declaring Metropolis the "Hometown of Superman". So I got to see Superman's home. And I too was able to stand for truth, justice and the American way on this February night, watching over this fine city.

The original plan when we were supposed to leave on Thursday was to stay in Metropolis, IL (which is the last city before you cross the Ohio River into Kentucky) but we decided to carry on to Nashville today. We passed by Farmer City. But I didn't see any farmers.
As I pulled out of the driveway, KD was on top of the table in the window saying goodbye to me. This makes it really hard to leave because as much as I claim to hate the little jerk, he is my little jerk. And that makes what we have special. But he'll be OK without me.

As it often does at this time of year, the night started creeping in around 5:00pm and the sun started to dip below the horizon around 5:30pm. While driving in the darkness is the less preferred option, the setting sun did give me the chance to capture some pretty pictures.

My Dad rarely travels anywhere without his 3 dogs, so this trip wouldn't be any different. At this point he was driving. Percy likes to sit on his lap while Trixie and Buffy made their temporary homes in the backseat (with me riding shotgun). It's kind of a mess to travel with 3 dogs but I had no business complaining. Like those little bastards, I was getting a free ride and was in no position to voice my opinion.

There wasn't a whole lot going on in Metropolis, IL. Granted it was a Sunday night in a small town in middle America, so that was to be expected. But this place was eerily silent and I could walk down the middle of Market Street and not worry about a car hitting me. But in case I did find myself in danger, I knew that Superman himself would come to my rescue and save me. Because that is what he does.

We stayed at the Hilton Nashville Airport hotel on the Eastside of town. We had driven about 9 1/2 hours today so with potty stops, it had been a long day. We had 8 hours to go until we reached Port St. Joe, so it was beneficial to all of us to get a good night's sleep so that we didn't all have problems in the car tomorrow.
