Afterglow 2007 - Day 3 Monday |
James is still regarded as the pinnacle of stardom here at the Afterglow basketball court, and he is respected so much that he is double covered almost every single time that he has a ball in his possession. Despite the incredible opposition, James shakes it off, drives towards the hoop, extends every inch of his 5 foot 9 frame and nails an NBA-style lay-up. James may have been recognized for his work with an athlete of the week award, but I still think that he deserves so much more, kind of like a lifetime achievement award (hint hint). |
Psych-outs have long been a part of competitive sports, but the creative use of them and their implementation of them into the major sports has increased sine the 1998 release of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's "Baseketball". That movie has gone on to become a cult classic, and my generation has gone to great lengths to use psych-outs as often as possible. Brian realized that his best chance of being a good defensive player would be to hike up his shorts and show off his powder white thighs. Do you want to know the best thing about it? It actually worked. |
No one wanted to guard Brian because they feared the prolonged consequences of being too close to his exposed skin. Just now I realized another thing that repels defenders from covering Brian - his horribly mismatched wardrobe. It's no secret that he dresses himself. His Mom never would pick those clothes out for him. |
Everyone has the opportunity to take the court or the field and excel at Afterglow sports. Unfortunately, some of us has lost the will to take advantage of that opportunity. Some would call it laziness, getting old, or simply doing what they want on their own vacation. I'm not going to call it anything; it just is, and that's how I like it. |
I rode the scooter around the Afterglow circle singing the Wicked Witch of the West Theme from the Wizard of Oz. When I got to the end of the song, I yelled out "I'll get you my pretty, and your little dog too!" and let out a loud cackle. The folks that were in the vicinity of my maniacal actions stood far back and watched with wide eyes and open jaws. It was sweet. |
I used to participate in Afterglow basketball, but I have long since thrown away my need to compete in athletic sports so that I could pursue a career in non-athletic sports like beer pong, bean bags, and darts. Although I can not go toe-to-toe with these Afterglow regulars, I will still show up to give my support to them as they spill out sweat and blood on the blacktop in the early hours of Day 3, a day we call Monday. |
Janelle and Tim came to hang out by the basketball court to watch the family shoot some hoops, but they had bigger and better things on their agenda for the time being. Janelle was already halfway through her Harry Potter book, and Tim was prepping for his annual post pot luck campfire concert. I was really glad to see that both of them found the time in their busy Afterglow schedules to come on down to support the Afterglow family athletes. |
