Portland February 2015 - Day 5

Jenny and Sarah were roommates for several years. But they were much closer. They share a bond that can never be broken. They were each Timmy's best friend, and nothing can ever take that away. It's a funny thing to watch these girls interact. They are so incredibly different yet so the same. Some random was walking by with a dog in a coat and they both instantly wanted a picture with it. And so it happened. Sometimes things just happen for a reason. That's the beauty of life. It is never more clear than when it is a dog in a coat on a February day in Portland.

It was Monday, which meant that it was time to go back home to Milwaukee and back to our normal lives again. But our flight wasn't until this evening. This meant that we still had plenty of time to goof around before it wasn't acceptable during business hours. We woke up this morning, much like we have every day since we have been alive, but today we colored the other menu we stole from the White Eagle Saloon. It technically was a work of art, but it wasn't as beautiful as the framed picture that Kelly had of Haystack/Goonie Rock that her friend took. I actually might steal this idea and frame one of my pictures. I would like to look at this every single day.

Since we were leaving Kelly's house and not coming back (until next time, which I am hoping happens sooner than later), I had to say goodbye to Stone. I'm not much of a dog person, but this young pooch kind of grew on me. I wasn't ready to take her home, but we had some good times that I will treasure. It's just too bad that she has to spend her time locked up in a cage, but that will happen when you don't know or respect your place. She still has a lot of growing up to do. But not too fast. These little babies always grow up too fast.

We stopped by Jackie Wilson's house to say goodbye and rage for just a little bit more. We had done everything and more on this Portland trip and it was great to see some old friends/family and meet some new amazing people. I loved Jackie's house. In fact, I loved all the little cute houses in this part of Portland. I might as well just admit it - I loved everything about Portland. If my roots weren't so deeply buried in Milwaukee/Wisconsin, I could see myself living out here. In an alternate Universe, this could be home.

Charlie's Deli had been blowing me up on Twitter the whole time I was out here. I had been "hash tagging" #Portland, #GroundKontrol and other things while I was out here. They had been favoriting my tweets and responding to them. I started interacting and decided I had to at least stop by for a sandwich before I left town. The owner (Charlie himself) met me there and we dined like social media royalty. It was delicious. I'll always support local beer/food when I'm visiting places. It pleases me.

Charlie's Deli was located in the Old Town Chinatown section of Downtown. This place had a big sweet gate and some gnarly beasts guarding the entrance. I'm sure this all meant something, but my stomach was too full of delicious sammys. Call that insensitive to other cultures if you will. I call it fully satisfied and not giving a shit. That's the way it goes sometimes. No apologies are necessary.

From the Wikipedia Page, "Voodoo Doughnut is an independent doughnut shop based in Portland, Oregon, known for its unusual doughnuts, eclectic decor, and iconic pink boxes featuring the company logo and illustrations of voodoo priests." I have heard of this place before, but we didn't try out their product while visiting this lovely city. I guess I just wasn't jonesing for a wacky doughnut. I was eager to check out more of this delightful city and see all that she had to offer. While it probably will take multiple visits to soak it all in, I feel like we did a pretty good job. Portland reminds me of Milwaukee so much. This river walk area certainly rekindled that thought. I was a stranger in a strange land. Only this land wasn't really strange. That comforted me in a soothing kind of way.

We walked around downtown and passed by the Shanghai Underground Bar that we went to on Friday night. It looked much different in the day time, but that was probably because I was outside and not deep underground. Before we skipped out of town for good, we went by the restaurant that Sarah works at to say our last goodbyes. It really was great to see her again. I consider Sarah family and it pains me that we don't get to see each other that often. Living so far away will do that to you. It was hard to say goodbye, but goodbye is only a word. We never really say goodbye. We are really saying that I will see you again. Maybe not soon. But I will see you again.
