World Series of Beer Pong 6 - Day 1

For some reason the only free WiFi internet in the Flamingo is near the ballroom (where the tournament is played.) I don't know what the problem is with giving away internet for free, but I was up early so I went over there to upload the video I made about the first day out here (before). You can find that blog entry and video over at Pookon's Ill Blog. I'm used to waking up around 7:30 am central time because of my job, so it wasn't unusual when I was up and about at 5:30 am local time. Since I was already up, I decided to go do a little gambling and get the day started right.

I went over to O'Shea's Casino, which is where I spend most of my time during the WSoBP when I'm not contractually obligated to be in the Flamingo. I sat down at the Fireball slot machine and immediately started making noise. I moved over to Blue Lagoon (I farted once on the set of Blue Lagoon) then ended up on Dean Martin's Dance Party. I was winning (and I was like 1 of 20 people there) so I kept on getting free drinks. By 9am I was up like $80 and I was wasted. But I had to play some beer pong, so I grabbed some margaritas from Casino Royale and stumbled back to the Flamingo to wake Hummel.

When I got back to the room I invited my friends from Madison (Zach, Joe, Sam and Josh) up to our room to practice. This was their first time at the WSoBP and they felt the need to warm up before Day 1. I was fine standing on the sidelines and judging because I have a long standing superstition of not practicing before official games. Instead I poured drinks for everyone and introduced them to rum and Mountain Dew Amp, which they put back like nobody's business. With a little liquid courage in our systems, we were now ready to take on the world.

Just because I don't practice before games doesn't mean that I wasn't ready for the tournament. I just like to use a little method called drunken recall. Just get hammered, shut your mind off and let your muscle memory take over. I've easily taken around a million shots over the 9 years or so that I've been playing beer pong and I really haven't changed my shot, so instinct should take over where all else fails. These guys are a few years younger then me, and therefore aren't wise to my time tested ways. But hey, to each their own. Who am I to tell them what to do?

Brodey is the reason that we are still here after all these years. Hummel and I were the lone members of the Milwaukee beer pong contingent, but we felt so much better knowing that Brodey was here in some form. We could already tell that this year would be no where near as awesome as the previous five, but it was good to be out here again anyway. In a perfect world the entire gang would have been out here for another adventure, but the truth is that we are all getting old. Some things get just get old too. And then people move on in their lives.

Brodey is not only the Godfather to the members of CHBPL, Milwaukee beer pong and myself, but every person on the planet. Most people just don't know it yet. Those that are fortunate to have met Brodey (like Zach and Joe) respect him and what he means to the beer pong community. Brodey couldn't make it this year (for the 1st time ever) but we still brought him along with us for inspiration. And what better inspiration than a Bartender of the Week poster. There is nothing better to represent him.
