World Series of Beer Pong 6 - Day 1

The ballroom at the Flamingo is all set up for the World Series of Beer Pong but truth be told I don't think she is ready for the awesomeness that is going to be happening here over the next few days. But since this was the 3rd time she has hosted this event, I'm pretty sure there's not another room in Vegas who could do it.

Joe, Zach and Gina were out here for the 1st time. They've played plenty of beer pong in their days and they've seen the documentary Last Cup, but nothing can prepare them for the insanity of this place. In just a few short moments they would be thrown right into the mix. But I had faith that they would be able to make it out alive.

When I saw these guys with Gnar Kill t-shirts with Rake Yohn's face on them, I freakin' flipped the F out. See, Gnarkill and the characters of Falcone and Hellboy come from the movie Haggard which stared Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn and a bunch of their buddies that you might recognize from CKY, Viva La Bam and Jackass. Haggard is a fantastic movie, and for a while I was convinced that my brother Timmy, cousin Kevin and I were the only people who appreciated this flick. But it turns out that I was wrong. Good to know there's other smart people out in the world.

I'm not going to make any excuses, nor will I ever, but we got a pretty tough draw in the first round. Bangarang finished somewhere in the top 10 last year and nearly won the whole damn thing. Last year they barely missed, but we caught them in a game where they were struggling to make cups. The only problem was that I was struggling as well. I'm pretty sure that I only hit one cup and Hummel was on his game but we ended up losing a very winnable game. I believe that winning game 1 is huge, so right away in Year 6 we would be playing from behind.

I hate losing game 1 in a beer pong tournament. When you lose the pressure starts to mount from there on because you start pressing trying to get the win. When you win that first game the pressure is off and you can just coast through the rest of the day because you already got over that hump. That wouldn't be the case today, as we lost by 5 cups to the team who would eventually finish 9th overall at WSoBP IV.

Or so they thought. Back home you don't have hundreds of people watching your each and every move. Truth be told they may not be actively watching your game, but their eyes may gaze upon you. It's up to the individual player to filter out all of that extraneous nonsense, but you can't help but feel like you're playing on a much larger stage. And in beer pong, there's no bigger stage than the World Series in Las Vegas.

There were 507 teams competing in WSoBP VI and you only play 12 games in the 2 day preliminary tournament. So that makes it very unlikely that you will have to play someone you know. But it does happen. At WSoBP IV, Balkman and Brodey faced and defeated Hummel and Katie J. But it was still kind of a surprise that Zach and Joe would have to face Sam and Josh (all of them are in the same beer pong league back home in Madison) in the first game of the tournament. They played a practice game prior to the actual one and it was just like playing back home.
