Afterglow 2013 - Day 6 Thursday

Signup for the Horseshoe tournament begins on Monday night after the Potluck Dinner. The Championship game is on Thursday evening right before the awards and video night, so that means we have 2 full days and change to play our games. So why do we wait until Thursday to play? I don't know. Possibly there's something else going on at Afterglow? Maybe we're too hungover or full of rage to remember to play. Whatever the case may be, we cram a week's worth of games into the final day.

I like to give credit where credit is due, but let's face it - Kevin and Clare didn't belong in the Championship Game. Was that too harsh? But they did earn it by their clutch play and team chemistry. At the time they were dating and things were going well but (**SPOILER ALERT**) they have since broken up. But at that moment, in that time, things were pretty good. And although they didn't win the big game (that victory would once again to me and my Mother) I am proud to have competed against them on the field of battle.

We had a pretty epic matchup early in the first few rounds as Kevin and Clare against Tommy and Stacy, who have won at least one Championship in the past. It was win or go home, and once you're at Afterglow, you never want to go back home.

I've been playing Horseshoes with my Mom forever and we've managed to win a couple of Championships. We played against Erin and her husband and were able to dismantle them with ease. We're the Reckers. No mere mortal stands a chance.

Somehow Kevin was able to defy all expectation and actually win a competition of a skilled athletic event. In order to do so he had to take down some former Champions along the way. Tommy and Stacy were dumbfounded on how this was able to occur, but all is fair in love and horseshoes, so they took it in stride. After the match they were in good spirits and even posed for some publicity shots. Nice sportsmanship.

I kind of lost the sequence of events leading up to and including these pictures. I blame the booze and my advancing years. I tried to ask my former Historian Kevin about what happened and he was unable to provide any insight. That's why he's the former Historian folks. All I can gather is what I see from these pictures, and that is that Kevin and Clare are playing horseshoes. So that's what happened.

There's a reason why they call dogs man's best friend. Because a dog is always there when you need a pick me up. Tommy was disappointed about being knocked out of the tournament and sought solace in the company of Alpine/Summit/Whatever.

My Mom is amazing in so many ways, but I never thought one of those ways would be at horseshoes. I wish that I could say I carried the team based upon brute strength and proficiency at games that you can play with a drink in hand, but we all know the truth.
