Afterglow 2007 - Day 3 Monday

I always have and always will continue to be enamored with fire. Its power and capability is both threatening and calming at the same time. It's like the line from Spiderman - with great power comes great responsibility. Fire has the power to warm, but it also can be one of the most destructive and uncontrollable forces on the planet

I honestly don't remember too much from this night, and in fact I'm getting quite used to it because at Afterglow I'm drunk all the time. Brian seems to think that everything was going well, because he gives me two thumbs up. Retaining memories when you are drinking is just about as hard as trying to ice skate uphill. In both situations, you just give up and slide on down towards the bottom with helpless abandon. I don't really mind that I can't remember anything about that night, because even if I could have, it would have gone been just like this - we sang songs, laughed, looked at the fire, made jokes, told stories, and eventually disbanded and went to bed. Every night ends the same here at Afterglow, and I'll never have a problem with that because every nights always ends well. This place after all, is the happiest place on Earth. If it starts happy, stays happy, it almost always ends happy.

Marshmallows have been present at campfires ever since man first discovered fire. In fact, it is widely known (although not listed in modern history books) that smores were considered a delicacy by cavemen. Faith keeps the campfire tradition alive by roasting sugar puffs on a stick, much to the delight if the rest of the gang.

The people of Afterglow are always delighted when Tim and Kris (Mom) pull out the guitars and give everyone a free show. Uncle Gary stuck around and played a few songs as a special guest appearance this year, which only made people more excited. The usual repertoire of songs were on display - classics like Harry Chapin's Cats in the Cradle, Coven's One Tin Soldier, and Peter Paul + Mary's Puff the Magic Dragon to new classics such as June's Blanket's Hoedown to Tenacious D's Tribute. The highlight of every single show is always a toss-up between 2 songs - trying to make it through Don McLean's American Pie without screwing up the order of the verses and whatever song that Uncle Greg comes up with, such as More Beer from 2006. Kids of all ages sing along to All God's Creatures and everyone in attendance gets their money's worth. Considering that this show is free, it's a damn good value.
