Afterglow RFT VIII: Before It's Too Late - Day 1

In the Fall of 2018, my Dad once again rented a cabin at Afterglow over Labor Day weekend and invited me to join him. He planned on being there from Friday August 31 - Tuesday September 4. And I would have been there the whole time with him except that I had plans on Sunday. My buddy Mike Bates' parents Steve and Bernie were celebrating their 40th Wedding Anniversary and there was a surprise party for them in West Bend, which I could not miss. So I had to figure out a way to do both. I could go up Thursday night and come back Sunday morning, but that would mean I would miss my Mom's birthday on Saturday (the 1st), which is probably not a good idea. So I guess that means I would leave from West Bend on Sunday evening at get to Afterglow at night. Then I'd really only have one day (Monday) of Afterglow before I had to leave on Tuesday to head back home. But there's no other place I would drive 5 hours there and 5 hours back only to be there for 1 day. So this became RFT VIII.

The party was really nice. My Mom rode up with some friends and I was able to spend time with Mike and the rest of the Bates family. I also got to see Pete and Cathy Wilhelm (parents of my friend Mike) who I haven't seen in years. It was nice to catch up with them. I wished I could have stayed longer but I still had to drive 4 hours North. It rained until Oshkosh and I put the top down on my convertible in Winneconne. I put on a sweatshirt in Wausau, drove through some wicked fog in Tomahawk, flipped off a skunk crossing the road in Eagle River, saw a 6-pack of Deer and a yellow half moon on the way to Phelps and did it all with only one good eye. I didn't get to Afterglow until after midnight and I hope I didn't cause a stir in cabin #3 when I arrived (as my Dad's dogs go nuts when I come over). But I was here and would enjoy what little time I had.

We had a really nice little Saturday for Mom's birthday. We went to this pizza joint in the Wauwatosa Village that had an outdoor patio. Our friend Shayne was the musical entertainment for the evening and we ate and drank to our heart's delight. On Sunday morning I opened up the window and let Korben Dallas smell freedom. This is his favorite thing to do. I had a little time to kill as the party wasn't until mid afternoon, so I enjoyed the morning, finished whatever packing I had left and then hit the road in search of adventure. But first, let's party for marriage!
